Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pack trip?

A pack trip uses mules to carry your gear (and sometimes you) into the backcountry. Depending on the service, you can choose a simple gear drop-off (Spot Trip), a round-trip (Dunnage Trip), or go all-in with wranglers, a cook, and full camp support (Full Service).

What’s the difference between a Spot Trip and a Dunnage Trip?

A Spot Trip is one-way: we pack your gear in and leave you to enjoy your trip. You’ll haul your own gear back out. A Dunnage Trip is two-way: we pack your gear in and then return at the end to haul it all back out.

Can I ride a mule instead of hiking?

Yes. You can hire a riding mule and packer to take you up or down the trail. Our mules are sure-footed and used to carrying people.

How much gear can a mule carry?

Roughly 120–150 pounds per mule, balanced in two equal loads. Think of it as a backcountry Uber with strict baggage limits.

Do I need to bring my own food and camping gear?

Yes, unless you book a Full Service Trip — which includes meal planning, a cook, and the whole works.

What should I pack?

We’ll provide a packing list to help you keep gear balanced, safe, and backcountry-friendly. Duffels work best (no hard suitcases, please). Learn More.

Do I need a permit?

That depends on your destination. Many backcountry trailheads in the Eastern Sierra require wilderness permits. We’ll point you in the right direction, but securing permits is your responsibility.

How far in advance should I book?

Summer is busy, especially July–September. The earlier you book, the better chance we’ll have mules and packers available.

Are trips family-friendly?

Absolutely. Kids can ride with a packer, and families often book spot or dunnage trips so everyone can enjoy the backcountry without hauling heavy packs.

What about fishing trips?

We offer guided fly-fishing trips with pack support. Your guide will take you to some of the best alpine lakes and streams in the Sierra.

What if I’ve never ridden a mule or horse before?

No problem. Our packers are pros at pairing you with the right animal and making sure you’re comfortable in the saddle.
